RKC: I xeroxed a copy of
the book I was telling you about yesterday. I send it FedEx and it should
arrive tomorrow afternoon. You may want to make copies and send to Mr. Demagnus
and Mr. Ricks. I think this is the verse you read to me (1 Cor 14:34-35). Below
it is the verse I was thinking of and couldn't remember where it was...it
clarifies where Paul is coming from. Not only are women to learn in silence,
but they are not permitted to teach (1 Timothy 2:11-15).
1 Corinthians 14:34-35
34 the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not
permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says.
35 If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at
home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
1 Timothy 2:11-15
11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness.
12 I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep
silent.
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a
transgressor.
15 Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith
and love and holiness, with modesty.
RKC: My
experience when these verses are shown to someone (especially women) who
believes the Bible to be 100% infallible is they:
(1) Are silent or offer no explanation.
(2) Change the subject.
(3) Claim the verse has been abrogated with another verse which is never
provided.
or
(4) Claim the verse has been voided/expired with no Biblical proof or a list of
other voided verses.
Bottom line, for those who claim the Bible is 100% God and not tampered by with
man must address is God gender biased or is man gender biased. I included some
additional verses and other statements by "clergy" from the first and
second century.
Genesis 3:1-17
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the
LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat
of any tree of the garden'?"
2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees
of the garden;
3 but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the
midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"
4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die.
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will
be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a
delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she
took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and
they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of
the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD
God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are
you?"
10 And he said, "I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was
afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."
11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you not to eat?"
12 The man said, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me
fruit of the tree, and I ate."
13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have
done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I ate."
14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed
are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall
go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her
seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."
16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in
childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be
for your husband, and he shall rule over you."
17 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your
wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat
of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all
the days of your life;
RKC: Some
interesting things can be found here. Satan targets and tempts only Eve. Eve
misleads/tempts Adam. Watch for more of this theme in the following verses.
Adam accuses Eve instead of taking responsibility for his own actions. Adam is
punished for "listening" to his wife.
Ecclesiastes 7:26-28
26 And I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and
nets, and whose hands are fetters; he who pleases God escapes her, but the
sinner is taken by her.
27 Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, adding one thing to another
to find the sum,
28 which my mind has sought repeatedly, but I have not found. One man among a
thousand I found, but a woman among all these I have not found.
Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 25:19-24
19 All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman: let the
portion of a sinner fall upon her.
20 As the climbing up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, so is a wife full
of words to a quiet man.
21 Stumble not at the beauty of a woman, and desire her not for pleasure.
22 A woman, if she maintain her husband, is full of anger, impudence, and much
reproach.
23 A wicked woman abateth the courage, maketh an heavy countenance and a
wounded heart: a woman that will not comfort her husband in distress maketh
weak hands and feeble knees.
24 Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die.
Leviticus 12:2-5
2 "Say to the people of Israel, If a woman conceives, and
bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as at the time of her
menstruation, she shall be unclean.
3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
4 Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying;
she shall not touch any hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the
days of her purifying are completed.
5 But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in
her menstruation; and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for
sixty-six days.
Deuteronomy 22:13-21
13 "If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and then spurns her,
14 and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings an evil name upon her,
saying, 'I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her the
tokens of virginity,'
15 then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out
the tokens of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate;
16 and the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, 'I gave my
daughter to this man to wife, and he spurns her;
17 and lo, he has made shameful charges against her, saying, "I did not
find in your daughter the tokens of virginity." And yet these are the
tokens of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the
elders of the city.
18 Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him;
19 and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the
father of the young woman, because he has brought an evil name upon a virgin of
Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
20 But if the thing is true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the
young woman,
21 then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house,
and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has
wrought folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house; so you
shall purge the evil from the midst of you.
Numbers 30:2-15
2 When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a
pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds
out of his mouth.
3 Or when a woman vows a vow to the LORD, and binds herself by a pledge, while
within her father's house, in her youth,
4 and her father hears of her vow and of her pledge by which she has bound
herself, and says nothing to her; then all her vows shall stand, and every
pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand.
5 But if her father expresses disapproval to her on the day that he hears of
it, no vow of hers, no pledge by which she has bound herself, shall stand; and
the LORD will forgive her, because her father opposed her.
6 And if she is married to a husband, while under her vows or any thoughtless
utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself,
7 and her husband hears of it, and says nothing to her on the day that he
hears; then her vows shall stand, and her pledges by which she has bound
herself shall stand.
8 But if, on the day that her husband comes to hear of it, he expresses
disapproval, then he shall make void her vow which was on her, and the
thoughtless utterance of her lips, by which she bound herself; and the LORD
will forgive her.
9 But any vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, anything by which she has
bound herself, shall stand against her.
10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound herself by a pledge with
an oath,
11 and her husband heard of it, and said nothing to her, and did not oppose
her; then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she bound herself
shall stand.
12 But if her husband makes them null and void on the day that he hears them,
then whatever proceeds out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning her
pledge of herself, shall not stand: her
husband has made them void, and the LORD will forgive her.
13 Any vow and any binding oath to afflict herself, her husband may establish,
or her husband may make void.
14 But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he establishes
all her vows, or all her pledges, that are upon her; he has established them,
because he said nothing to her on the day that
he heard of them.
15 But if he makes them null and void after he has heard of them, then he shall
bear her iniquity."
Leviticus 21:13-15
13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity.
14 A widow, or one divorced, or a woman who has been defiled, or a harlot,
these he shall not marry; but he shall take to wife a virgin of his own people,
15 that he may not profane his children among his people; for I am the LORD who
sanctify him."
Deuteronomy 22:28-30
28 "If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies
with her, and they are found,
29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman
fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated
her; he may not put her away all his days.
30 "A man shall not take his father's wife, nor shall he uncover her who
is his father's.
The Nine Curses
"To the woman He gave nine curses and death: the burden of the blood of
menstruation and the blood of virginity; the burden of pregnancy; the burden of
childbirth; the burden of bringing up the children; her head is covered as one
in mourning; she pierces her ear like a permanent slave or slave girl who serves
her master; she is not to be believed as a witness; and after
everything--death"
Saint Tertullian
"Do you not know that you are each an Eve? The sentence of God on this
sex of yours lives in this age: the guilt must of necessity live too. You are
the Devil's gateway: You are the unsealer of the forbidden tree: You are the
first deserter of the divine law: You are she who persuaded him whom the devil
was not valiant enough to attack. You destroyed so easily God's image, man. On
account of your desert even the Son of God had to die."
Saint Augustine
"What is the difference whether it is in a wife or a mother, it is still
Eve the temptress that we must beware of in any woman." "I fail to
see what use a woman can be to a man, if one excludes the function of bearing
children."
Saint Thomas Aquinas
"As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten,
for the active force in the male seed tends to the production of a perfect
likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of woman comes from a defect
in the active force or from some material indisposition, or even from some
external influence."
Martin Luther
"If they become tired or even die, that does not matter. Let them die in
childbirth, that's why they are there."
