Viccram99:
What is the reasoning behind God telling Muslims not to be friends with
Christians and Jews? The following verse also implies that Christians and Jews
are not believers.
005.051
YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your
friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And
he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah
guideth not a people unjust.
PICKTHAL: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends.
They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is
(one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
SHAKIR: O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends;
they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a
friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust
people
RKC: Didn’t we go
through this last spring?
51.
O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and
protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst
you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a
people unjust.
52. Those in whose hearts is a disease - thou seest how
eagerly they run about amongst them, saying: "We do fear lest a change of
fortune bring us disaster." Ah! perhaps Allah will give (thee) victory, or
a decision according to His will. Then will they repent of the thoughts which
they secretly harboured in their hearts.
53.
And those who believe will say: "Are these the men who swore their
strongest oaths by Allah, that they were with you?" All that they do will
be in vain, and they will fall into (nothing but) ruin.
54.
O ye who believe! if any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will
Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- lowly with the
believers, mighty against the rejecters, fighting in the way of Allah, and
never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the grace of Allah,
which He will bestow on whom He pleaseth. And Allah encompasseth all, and He
knoweth all things.
55.
Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the
(fellowship of) believers,- those who establish regular prayers and regular
charity, and they bow down humbly (in worship).
56.
As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the
(fellowship of) believers,- it is the fellowship of Allah that must certainly
triumph.
57.
O ye who believe! take not
for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or
sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among
those who reject Faith; but fear ye Allah, if ye have faith (indeed).
58.
When ye proclaim your call
to prayer they take it (but) as mockery and sport; that is because they
are a people without understanding.
59.
Say: "O people of the Book! Do ye disapprove of us for no other reason
than that we believe in Allah, and the revelation that hath come to us and that
which came before (us), and (perhaps) that most of you are rebellious and
disobedient?"
RKC: The Qur'an also
says...
Surah 60
7. It may be that Allah will grant love (and
friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies. For Allah has
power (over all things); And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
8. Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for
(your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly
with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.
9. Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who
fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support
(others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and
protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do
wrong.
