In the Hebrew bible, God is often referred to as lsrael's "Savior" and “Redeemer” .Who does the Hebrew bible identify as Israel's "Savior" and" Redeemer" , and why are those titles applied to the One doing the saving and redeeming? Is it because He is Savior who came into the world to save His people from their sins (Mt. 1:21), or a Redeemer who came to redeem us from the curse of the Mosaic Law (Gal. 3:13), or are those titles applied to him for other reasons? Let’s take a look.

Exodus 6:

6 Therefore, say to the Children of Israel: 'I am YHWH, and I shall take you out from under the burdens of Egypt; I shall rescue you from their service; I shall redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments .

Deuteronomy 15:

15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and YHWH, your God, redeemed you; therefore, I command you regarding this matter today

Deuteronomy 24:

18 You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and YHWH, your God, redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing

2 Samuel 7:

23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, a unique nation on earth, whom God went forth to redeem unto Himself for a people – thus gaining Himself renown – and to perform great works for you [Israel] and wonders for Your Land, [driving out] nations and their gods from before Your people, whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt. (See also 1 Chron. 17:21)

In each of the four verses 1 provided above, YHWH is identified as Israel's Redeemer because he redeemed the Hebrews from the burden of slavery in the land of Egypt. Hundreds  of years later, YHWH would be referred to as Israel’s Redeemer for a similar reason.

Micah 4:

10 Be in pain and groan like a woman in childbirth, O daughter of Zion; for now you will leave the city and dwell in the field; you will come to Babylonia and there you will be rescued; there YHWH will redeem you from the palms of your enemies.

Jeremiah 50:

33 Thus said YHWH, Master of Legions: The Children of Israel and the Children of Judah are oppressed together, all their captors hold them fast and refuse to let them free.

34 Their mighty Redeemer, YHWH, Master of Legions is His Name, will certainly take up their grievances, in order to calm the land and cause trembling for the inhabitants of Babylonia.

Isaiah 43:

14 Thus said YHWH, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: Because of you I sent [him] to Babylonia and I took down all their bolted gates and the Chaldeans [fled] in boats amid their shouting.

Isaiah 48:

20 Go forth from Babylonia; hurry from Chaldea. With glad song relate, announce this; bring forth [the message] to the ends of the earth; say ‘YHWH has redeemed His servant Jacob’.

Isaiah 51:

11 Then the redeemed of YHWH will return and come to Zion with glad song, with eternal gladness upon their head. They will attain joy and gladness; sadness and sighing will flee.

lsaiah 59:

20 A redeemer will come to Zion, and to those of Jacob who repent from willful sin – the word of YHWH.

After seventy years of exile in Babylonia, YHWH Redeemed His people by allowing them to return to the land of Judah. In the last verse I quoted above, YHWH said that a redeemer would come to Zion, to those of Israel who repented from their willful sins. The word “Zion” in Isaiah 59:20 represents the captives who had been exiled to Babylonia. YHWH promised to come to those who repented when their seventy years of exile were completed: “For thus said YHWH: After seventy years for Babylonia have been completed I will attend to you and I will fulfill for you My favorable promise, to return you to this place” (Jer.29:10).

The imagery of God as a warrior who would come to his people “Zion” in Babylonia to fight for their redemption is illustrated in Isaiah 59:16-19. In verse 12, “Zion” acknowledges its iniquities, which is a sign of their repentance. Once “Zion” repented from willful sin, YHWH “donned righteousness like armor and a helmet of salvation on His head; and He donned garments of vengeance as His attire and clothed Himself in zealousness like a coat” (v.17). He was ready to do battle for His people and fulfill the promise that He had spoken to Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 24:

5 Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: Like these good figs, so shall I recall the exile of Judah, whom I expelled from this place to the land of the Chaldeans, for goodness.

6 I shall set My eye upon them for goodness, and return them to this land, and I shall rebuild them and not destroy; I shall replant them and not uproot.

7 And I shall grant them the heart to know Me, that I am YHWH, and they will be a people unto Me, and I shall be a God for them, for they will return to Me with all their heart.
